I was lucky enough to grow up in a home where my Mum was very aware of how food affected our health. My brother had many food intolerances and health issues, so we grew up eating mostly gluten, dairy and sugar free foods.
As I entered the teenage years, my diet began to change. I started to consume more processed foods, takeaway and junk. By the end of my teen years, I was starting to display pretty chronic GI issues. Drinking and partying came into the game, and whilst I was having a great time, my health really did start to suffer. At the time I didn’t really connect the issues I was having with my diet and lifestyle though.
At 26 I had my first baby. I had a lot of pregnancy issues, and our daughter had a lot of issues with constant regurgitation and allergies to my milk. When she started eating solids the eczema and ear infections began.
4 years later our son was born, our family was complete. He suffered from terrible constipation even before starting solids. He also had constant bouts of croup and ear infections, this is when I started to realise that something needed to change. The constant prescriptions for steroids and antibiotics were masking the problems (and causing others), but not getting to the root cause.
I started by going to a community talk about food additives, and it blew my mind. I had NO idea that these ingredients that were in most packaged food could cause asthma, eczema, hyperactivity and more. I bought the book “The Chemical Maze” and began to read the labels of all the food I was buying. I was given a tip in these early days which I still hold fast to, and that was to take small steps. Change one food item each shopping trip to a better choice so that it doesn’t become overwhelming. Around the same time I started to introduce juicing into our daily life. Within a week of having a daily veg and fruit juice, our sons chronic constipation stopped totally. This was really the lightbulb moment for me, I saw an almost immediate change in a chronic health issue that was a problem for years, just by changing one thing.
Over the next 5 years we completely overhauled our diets and lifestyle. We improved the quality of the food we were eating, cooked most things from scratch, started to grow some of our own veggies and did some pretty intense work on healing our guts. Our health improved ten fold. We have healed food intolerances, parasite infections, skin problems and more. This was when I decided that I needed more, I needed to share this information with other families suffering the same issues, so I enrolled in The Nutrition Academy to study Functional Nutrition.
The Nutrition Academy taught me to look at health holistically and vitalistically. Everybody is unique, and there is no diet or fix that is perfect for everyone. I believe that given the right support everyone has the chance to achieve thriving health. My goal, is to help families take the small steps to create great and lasting change, and now I can really support the community with this goal through Naturaliste Health.
